Songs for Swinging Larvae

In 1985 I recorded an episode of a show called "Some Bizarre", which was a semi-regular feature on the USA Network's "Night Flight" (an innovative music-oriented weekly that is much missed). There were some cool music videos on this particular edition, but by far the strangest, most disturbing was a song cycle by Ralph Records artists Renaldo & the Loaf called "Songs for Swinging Larvae".

This unsettling masterwork was something completely alien to what music videos at that time were all about. For that matter, it shared little in common with any music at all, as far as I could tell.

It's filled with disturbing symbolism, and the sounds (which I've loosely referred to as "music") are disorienting, especially if you're expecting the usual bass-guitar-drums-singer set-up. Even if you're not, even if you're prepared for experimentalism or avante-garde, you may still be taken aback by the overall effect of the thing.

Several years ago I lost the videotape I had recorded in 1985 (which was a real shame, because it also contained a couple of episodes of "New Wave Theater"). I've tried to find stuff on the internet about Renaldo & the Loaf, but there's mighty slim pickings to be found. I had resigned myself to never hearing "Songs for Swinging Larvae"
again, that I would have to live the rest of my life with only the haunting images, like memories from my own life, seared into my brain.

But then, earlier this morning, it hit me! YouTube!!! I've tracked down countless videos and performances that I never thought I'd see again on that wonderful website (which I lovingly refer to as "my time machine"). Maybe...just maybe I could find it there.

Sure enough, there it was in all it's weird glory. The video quality is remarkably excellent and the whole thing is exactly as I remember it. The stuff nightmares are made of.

Check it for yourself.

RENALDO & THE LOAF: "Songs for Swinging Larvae"

"Why I hate watermelons."

I'll never forget the night I met this buxom, free spirited man-eater. If memory serves, her name was Yolanda Ledbetter, though all her friends in the bar called her "Yo-mama Bedwetter". She answered to either, as she had no shame.

Yolanda's favorite thing to do was what country boys down south call "The Watermelon Crawl". If your not familiar with this pastime, all you really need to know is that it involves a voluminous amount of "sweet red wine made from the finest watermelons on the vine". Popular country and western vocalist Tracy Byrd immortalized the whole thing in a song which offered the sage advice: "If you drink, don't drive, do the watermelon crawl", which basically is an illusion to the foolishness of driving drunk and the inevitability of crawling once you've had your fill of the beverage in question.

Anyway, back to Ms. Bedwetter...I mean, Ledbetter. The night we met she was somewhere between the driving and the crawling, headed quickly towards the latter. She strolled across the bar, stood next to me and slurred, "Do you have a watermelon I can sit on?"

I replied in the negative.

"If you had a watermelon", she continued, "I'd pick the seeds out with my toes."

"What would you do with them, then?" I inquired.

She was quick with her reply. "I'd stick at least one of 'em up the ass of every man in this dive!"

Being one of the males present that night and not wanting a handful of watermelon seeds shoved up my rectum, I tried to change the subject. "So, you're one of those blue-eyed beauties who hates men, are ye? Are you ridin' a bandwagon or do you come by it naturally?"

"The only bandwagon I'm ridin', my cocky friend, is loaded to breaking point with watermelons and you can bet there are thousands of seeds available there for me to ram up these bastards' bungholes. I told you once, I'm-a gonna pick out those little black seeds and stuck 'em up you guys' backsides, see what grows out of 'em."

I could tell she was a persistent woman. Twice more I attempted to divert the conversation from the sowing of seed to something less threatening to me (and to any other man there who was in danger of being fertile ground). Each time she insisted that the anuses of the entire male gender should be filled with watermelon seeds.

The night was winding down, rapidly approaching that time when, as Mickey Gilley once proclaimed, the girls all get prettier. Yolanda had backed off of the seed talk and was focusing her attention on the country & western band that was on stage (a backwater affair that butchered everything from Merle Haggard to Lynyrd Skynyrd). She was in agreement with me, insomuch as I had made a comment to the effect of "these guys suck". As deranged as she no doubt was, at least she knew a shitty band when she heard one.

The feisty, although by this time slightly inebriated Ms. Ledbetter drank one more glass of watermelon wine and I began talking to her about old dogs and children. Something in my conversational tone struck a chord with her, I do believe, because she said, "If you don't drive me home I'll have to do the watermelon crawl and I don't want to ruin this new pair of Wranglers I'm sportin'..."
They WERE nice Wranglers, I had to admit. It would be a shame to ruin them when a ride home was to be had for the price of a sordid, sweat-soaked, grunt-filled evening with a man who was bound and determined to change her mind about the general worthlessness of every man in the world. It was a daunting task, but I felt up to it.

We arrived at her house, a nice little place but a mess. Yolanda was apparently a slob. She had invited me in after I had insisted upon walking her to the door (I had to hold her up the whole way or she would have had to do the crawl, which would have defeated the whole purpose of my being her personal chauffeur). As the coolness of her air conditioning unit blew on her, she seemed to sober up a little bit. She could walk, albeit unsteadily.

She took my hand and dragged me to her bedroom. I put up a slight bit of resistance, but not much. Truth be told, I found her to be strangely sensuous, seductive & sexy at that moment (2:35 am to be exact). She pushed me onto the bed and said, "Get undressed, I'll be back in a moment."

"Bingo!" "Now THAT's what I'm talking about!" "Home run!" Such were the thoughts that ran through my mind..."Conquest!"

"Turn over, baby", she said in a voice that let me know that she was had great expectations. "I don't want you to see me as I walk through the door."

I was curious why she was so shy. After all, she really had a great body---she was stacked like a brick shit house, to tell the truth. But who knows why a woman is the way she is? If she was self-conscious I figured there was nothing I could do about it but to humour her. I had already stripped naked and my clothes were lying in a pile at the foot of the bed, next to a couple of empty Jim Beam bottles. I turned over, smiled and whispered to myself, "Oh, well, girls will be girls...I'm gonna get LAID tonight, brutha!"

Next thing I know I felt something entering my asshole. My next thought was that it wasn't someTHING, but some THINGS. Small little things, hard as pebbles, a little bit slimy but not enough to where I couldn't feel them making their way into the nether regions of my virgin rump.

Watermelon seeds. I should have seen that coming...

I see Yolanda every once in awhile.

I always turn away and pray she didn't see me.

To Aubrey

And Aubrey was her name,
A not so very ordinary girl or name.
But who's to blame?
For a love that wouldn't bloom
For the hearts that never played in tune.
Like a lovely melody that everyone can sing,
Take away the words that rhyme it doesn't mean a thing.

And Aubrey was her name.
We tripped the light and danced together to the moon,
But where was June.
No it never came around.
If it did it never made a sound,
Maybe I was absent or was listening to fast,
Catching all the words, but then the meaning going past,

But God I miss the girl,
And I'd go a thousand times around the world just to be
Closer to her than to me.

And Aubrey was her name,
I never knew her, but I loved her just the same,
I loved her name.
Wish that I had found the way
And the reasons that would make her stay.
I have learned to lead a life apart from all the rest.
If I can't have the one I want, I'll do without the best.

But how I miss the girl
And I'd go a million times around the world just to say
She had been mine for a day.

("Aubrey" by David Gates)

Maybe you didn't know, but I gave you that name. Your middle name (Lynn) was taken from your maternal grandfather, but I'm responsible for your first name. I still don't know why I chose it, other than maybe because the music was beautiful, as I was sure you would be. I was several hundred miles from you in the months before and leading to the day you came into this world...whenever I heard that song on the radio there was something about it...something that I cannot, even to this day, explain, but it seemed to mean something, something important.

So I took a chance and named you "Aubrey". Even though the words were not exactly what you'd expect in a song one would name a child after. No matter, I knew, by the time I was asked what I wanted to name you, it was already set in my mind...Aubrey.

The words turned out to be prophetic. Your mother left me when you were only 6 months old, and she took you with her. You never got to know me as a father (if you knew anything about me at all) and I never got to be a father to you. I've got a twelve year old son, now, and as I watch him grow I finally realize all that I've missed during those absent years.

For a long, long time I hoped and prayed that somehow, someway you would come into my life again. Maybe, I reasoned, you would be curious about your birth father, having known practically nothing about me all that time. I thought, "maybe when she's 18, maybe going to college and for the first time out from under her mother's wing (though I'm not suggesting that your mother had anything to do with keeping you away from me)". Three years later I thought, "well, now that she's 21, free and legal, who knows but that she could show up any day".

Today, my lost angel, is your 22nd birthday.

I have not given up on the hope that we will be re-united. God has heard my prayers concerning that so many times that He's not likely to forget it, so I put it in His hands. I've become resigned to the likelihood that I will never see you again. Hope remains, but it is buried deep so that it cannot be crushed by reality.

Aubrey, I wish you happiness, contentment, joy... I ran into your uncle a few months ago and though the subject of what happened between Barbra and I was still taboo (along with certain information regarding you), he did tell me that you'd been married a year before. He said you'd married a man from church. You were doing fine, and I have no doubt you are. I am glad. I know, as well as I know my own life's history, that you will succeed in all that you do.

I don't have anything to give you for your birthday. Said to say but that I haven't been able to get anything for you throughout the years, and even if I had, I wouldn't have known where to send it. And I know you'll probably never see this, that you likely have no idea that your dad writes such whacked-out stuff in a blog on the Internet. Still, this is for you...it's a song I wrote in 1987, when you were 2 years old. You'll have to forgive the somewhat negative allusions to your mother, but the wounds were still fresh from our parting.

Aubrey Lynn

I would run to you
Through fields of autumn
Just to see you smile again
But what's done is done
You can't go back
Forever's a long, long time
To be without you
What can I do?
These old songs are coming true
Some are sad and some tear me apart
Now I'm waiting, Aubrey Lynn
Can you turn me 'round again
Can you put your love back in my heart?

No shedding tears
I thought I could
But I did not understand
She looked into my eyes
Cast a web of lies
I guess she didn'tgive a damn
About me
She couldn't see
Something she could never be
She knew she didn't love me from the start
So now I'm waiting, Aubrey Lynn
Can you turn me 'round again
Can you put your love back in my heart?

Now I sleep alone
Through the starlit nights
And the sun comes 'round again
Another dream of you
Comes crashing in
Then I could sleep forever more
Here without you
Is it true?
Is there something I could do?
I can't stand to be so far apart
I'll keep waiting, Aubrey Lynn
Until you turn me 'round again
Until you put you love back in my heart

Pretty maudlin, eh? Oh well, you know that it came from a heart freshly broken, nonetheless filled with love for you, my daughter.

Before I sign off for today, I have another little something for you. I doubt you've ever seen it, as I don't think your mother has a copy.

This photograph of your mother and I was taken in 1980, at my senior prom. I was almost 18 years old and I guess Barbra was 17. We weren't much impressed with the whole "prom thing". After the dinner and the pictures were taken we left. The rest of the night was spent in each others' company, without all the DJ-provided hustle and bustle on the dance floor.

Despite what the song I wrote would have you believe, I know she really loved me during the time we had together. I know that I loved her with all my heart and soul. I think you can even see that in our eyes in this picture. It's the look of two people savouring their first drink from the fountain of love.

Now how corny is that??? :)

Anyhow...all this is just my long winded way of saying:

HAPPY 22nd BIRTHDAY, AUBREY!

I LOVE YOU!

"Victoria's Secret"

In the days before I became obsessed with Joni Lamb, I was seriously involved with this woman, the late Victoria Aldridge. The relationship was not long in duration, but it will forever be exalted in my memory as one that fulfilled my every desire. She was all that I ever wanted in a woman, and with her passing I knew that my needs would forever be altered, and that's when I realized that Joni was the only one who could pick up the slack to provide for me emotionally

I met Victioria at a laundromat in the small town of Seminole, Oklahoma. She was washing a load of clothes with her boyfriend, a heavilly tattooed biker sort who wore a durag emblazoned with the Harley-Davidson logo. She stood in his presence as if she feared for her life (which, as I found out later, she had good reason to). They had a boombox with them as she did their laundry. They were listening to a Mudvayne CD and had it turned up loud, since there were very few people there that evening. The ridiculously aggresive metal music seemed to provide the perfect atmosphere for what was to follow.

To make a long story short, I was rankled significantly when I happened to glance their way and saw the big lug shove Victoria against one of the dryers, raising his fist to her face and threatening to "give her a dose". She glared right back at him without the slightest trace of fear on her beautiful face.

There was the distinct likelihood that this particular scene had played itself out on several occasions in many different venues. For some reason I got the idea that, on most of those occasions, despite her tough countenace and fearless expression, Victoria had probably been knocked around a bit by this goon, who was obviously stronger than her physically but just as obviously a mental weakling. My gut instinct told me that she'd endured the brunt force of his fist on more occassions than she would admit to even the closest of friends.

I think that was the moment I fell in love with her...I wanted to be that friend to whom she could tell all of her secrets. I felt certain that mine was the shoulder she was destined to cry on. Up until then I had never believed in all that bullshhit about "soulmates". Now I wasn't so sure. The attraction for her that I became consumed in was like a ring of fire and I decided there and then that if she WERE my soulmate (and I hoped she was), well, I'd better do something and not let the opportunity pass, rare as it was.

My first duty was to restrain the boyfriend, to put an end to this violence he was inflicting upon a woman who was soon, I felt sure, to walk by my side for the rest of our lives together. It wasn't too hard to do. They guy was of a sort all too prevalent in this day and age: he was eager to "smack his bitch up", but when a real man came along for a round, the smacking turned against him. He ran away like a pussycat flees from a pit bull, which was the smartest thing he'd ever done in his pathetic, wasted life.

I feel the need, however, to point out that his hasty exit was delayed ever so slightly as I yanked the silly durag off of his head and stuffed the greasy thing in his mouth. I busted his chops a couple of times just hard enough to cause bloodshed (basically I'd walked up to his face and cold-cocked him while he was trying to figure out who I was and what I wanted with him). I kicked my knee into his groin with enough force to knock the wind out of him. He reeled and stumbled under the force of my blows, then bowed before the ultimate humiliation, the thick, gooey, warm gob of spittle that I launched into his eyes.

It was quite amazing that the fellow could even stand up after the ferocity of my revenge, but, much to the delight of my prospective soulmate, not only did he regain his composure, he ran out of that laundromat as if it were on fire.

As you might well imagine, Victoria was very happy to be relieved of the jerk. She giggled throughout the exhibition of rage that began with a pushy boyfriend and ended with a righteously pissed off motherfucker pulverzing the worthless piece of shit.

She was still smiling when she walked towards me and put her arm around my waist. My anger sated, I turned and looked into her eyes. She squeezed me tightly and, without a word, took my jaw into her free hand, turned my head towards hers and kissed me with a passion I had not experienced since the passing of my first wife (who loved me dearly, I am convinced, even though she left me 4 years into our marriage for a career as a customer service representative at JC Penney).

I returned the kiss, and that's when I knew that we were destined to be together. She packed all her things and left the run down, cockroach infested aparment that her ex-boyfriend had never bothered to keep up. I asked her to move in with me, and she gladly accepted the offer. It looked like things were going to work out all right, and they did for several months.

The sex was awesome. Victoria had a bit of a kinky streak in her and she liked nothing more than to tell me her fantasies while we made love. At first, I admit, I was taken aback at her vivid descriptions of the two of us getting it on with another couple in a van parked in the back lot of the local Assembly of God church. Soon enough, however, I found myself becoming quite aroused by her vivid descriptions of eccentric carnality. Before long I, too, was telling her my own fantasies as she swayed beneath me, moaning particularly loudly when I'd get to a part that she found particularly erotic (like the "scene" where I give her permission to sleep with my best friend, Gary).

It was all great, and I planned on asking her to marry me. We'd been a couple, a HAPPY couple, I might add, for a few years by then. I'd bought a ring, which I kept a secret from her by hiding it in a box of Cheerios where I usually kept large Zip-lock bags full of marijuana and meth. She knew better than to pry around in that box. Not that I would have treated her, if she did, with the same hateful violence as her ex, but we just had an agreement. I wouldn't look at the photo album she kept under the bed and she would stay out of my Cheerios box. The pact we made concerning these wishes was a sacred one, upon which our whole love affair hung in the balance.

But I never got to give her the ring.

One night, after a particularly hot and heavy session of story telling, she left to buy some rolling papers for us. If there was one thing she loved more than sex itself, it was getting high after having sex. I'd left my pipe at Gary's house after a party in which the conversation had become deep and philosophical, the downside being a significant memory loss. It was this assault on my brain cells that caused me to forget my pipe. Furthermore, Victoria's bong had a crack in it and she had given it to a stoner friend who said he could fix it. I had my doubts that he could really fix it, but I was relatively sure that if he DID fix it, Victoria would never know and the ownership of the bong would silently transfer to this burned-out hippie with his empty promises of restoration.

And so, with nothing in the house to smoke our weed in, Victoria offered to go to the convenience store. I had wanted to go with her, but she wouldn't let me. She said, "Oh, no, darling. It's just around the corner. Stay where you are, you look so handsome laying there in that pool of sweat!"

She left.

She never came back.

The cops found her body in a basement closet...her hands were bound and there was a nasty Harley Davidson durag in her mouth.

I was tore up for a long time after that. Even though I had tracked down the bastard that I knew had killed her. The cops tagged it a cold case when their efforts failed. They never would have figured it out, anyway, because I knew who the killer was and I wasn't going to let him go to trial, having condemned him the moment I saw that durag. It didn't take me too long to find him. I made him pay dearly for the heinous crime he had commited. I buried his broken body in a shallow grave near a construction site, and I covered it with cement.

Even after slaking my thirst for vengeance I was wrecked. My heart was broken. My spirit felt ripped in two and violated. Victoria, my precious Victoria. Oh, my God, would that it were me instead of you!

The only closure came when I retrieved the photo album from beneath our bed. She would have wanted me to see it under these circumstances. We'd agreed to as much when we made the pact. It was, indeed, closure of a sort, and yet even now I miss her and paiently await the day we are re-united in the afterlife. Joni is my dreamboat, but Victoria, having made a believer out of me, will forever be my soulmate.

There were 72 photographs in the book she had hidden for all those years. 72 images that revealed a side of her that I never would have believed existed, though she'd told me all about it practically every night since we first met. All this time she knew what was in my Cheerio box (besides the drugs, she always knew about them), and all this time, in her mysterious way, she had been trying to let me know what was in her secret photo album.

72 prints that showed my baby engaged in a myriad of sex acts, each one with a different man (or group of men). Each one as explicit as the raunchiest porn I'd ever seen. 72 angles that showed me the truth of how the fantasies she'd shared during our love-making were no fantasies at all. They were memories, each one she cherished and wanted me to know about in her own way, to give them to me. She accepted my tales of lust with loving amusement, but mine were all lies...hers were the truth.

O, what a life she had led before she met me. I assume it all happened before her thug ex-boyfriend had met her. His disgusting, ugly mug was not to be found in the line-up of gentlemen who, seen through the camera's eye, shared nights of fulfilled desire with the woman who was, all this time, my soulmate waiting to find me.

When I'd looked at all the pictures my mind drifted back to that first evening, when she put her arm around me and gave me the kiss that sealed our fates. Here's the truth...had I known about her wild past, the years chronicled in her secret album that she rarely took from under the bed in all our time together, it would not have changed a thing. I knew, from that kiss, that she was mine, and I hers. Nothing could have changed that, not even the 72. Her escapades were a surprise to me at first, but as time went by, and as I keep the pictures with me even to this day, I realized that they didn't bother me at all.

Because there was a part of me that had always wished that the tales she told in bed would come true someday.

In a strange, unexpected way, my wish was granted.

I've recovered now. The hole in my heart has scabbed over, it only bothers me once in a while.

Now that my soulmate is gone, I pine for a woman I know I can never have. Truth be told, I don't really want her...I just need the FEELING of wanting someone. Why not Joni? There can never be another for me but Victoria. I hope Joni knows that. I hope my feigned desire for her doesn't offend. I hope she finds out, and doesn't say anything about it to Marcus or anyone else...

...it can be our little secret.

YES! YES! YES!

Oh, boy. I AM EXCITED NOW!!!!!!

Sigur Ros "Heima" trailer

Shocking expressions

Every once in awhile I stumble across something so strange, so wickedly bizarre that it freaks me out.

Yesterday morning I went to a few garage sales. At one of them I picked up a book called "Body", which is basically a collection of artistic photographs depicting several aspects of the human body.

In addition to the majority of the book, which is pretty much what you'd expect from a book of that name, there was a also a lot of weird stuff, lots of carnival freak show oddities and bodily deformities, a very disturbing photo of a young man who was crucified for killing the son of his boss.

That one WAS really disturbing, but the one that I thought was the strangest was in a chapter called "Probes: the realm of scientific exploration". It came from a set called "mecanisme de la physionomie humaine au analyse electro-physiologique de l'expression des passions", which presented a technique used by Dr. Guillaume-Benjamin Duchenne in which facial expressions were induced by the application of electrical current to specific muscles. His goal was "to create a universally valid facial vocabulary", and he saw his findings as "invaluable to artists". *

What that means is that there are facial muscles that control all the expressions of emotion, and that they can be manipulated by electricity. A smile, induced by such means, is your TRUE smile, unaffected by any psychological agents which may factor into how you smile in public or even in private. This kind of smile is produced purely from the stimulation of the corresponding muscles, and the same goes for expressions associated with each emotion, such as fear, pleasure, bliss, etc.

That's a very unscientific, incomplete and likely error-filled condensation, but it's about as firm a grasp as I have on the subject. The circumstances of the photographs are indeed extraordinary, but it's the images themselves that seem deranged and eccentric.

I tried to find the same photograph used in "Body", which is of a young girl undergoimg the proceedure. In one of the plates she looks as if she's absolutely enraptured in some kind of mystical vision. Her eyes are rolled up in their sockets and even though she appears to be in a state of bliss, it still looks spooky and extremely fucked up (pardon my French).

Still, the photos I DID find are comparable, as you can see.

Cocteau Twins "Iceblink Luck" on a loop.

You know how sometimes you like a song so much that it gets stuck in your, repeating itself as if it were an endless loop?

Currently that song, for me, is "Iceblink Luck" by the Cocteau Twins. I haven't raved about them in a week or two, but I'll spare you the rant and just let you check it out yourself with this link to the video on YouTube (btw, the video itself is beautiful as well...most of their authorized videos are, so while you're there you might want to browse a bit).

Enjoy!

COCTEAU TWINS: "ICEBLINK LUCK"

8.03.2007

Joni! Joni! Joni!

I am daily falling deeper and deeper in love with Joni. Into a pool of bliss my heart sinks at the sight of her. I cannot relinquish this passion, though many of my closest associates (including my wife) have advised me that my desire for her is, as they say, a "dead end road". My family tells me that I am a deviant pervert because I call out her name when I'm asleep. My pastor says I'm treading dangerously close to some kind of mental adultery, and if nothing else, my attitude towards the vixen has served as an insult to the integrity of her husband, Marcus, who is the world-renowned founder of a network that provides airspace for some of the world's most blatant con-men and outright quacks (including, but not limited to Benny Hinn, John Hagee, Mike Murdock, Kenneth Copeland, Perry Stone, DR. [ha] Rod Parsley, Creflo Dollar & T.D. Jakes). So I don't feel too sorry for the guy, as he's responsible for broadcasting a lot of what some people refer to as "doctrine of the bullshit sort". Besides, he's got Joni, so no matter how low a blow he might be dealt, he will always have this ministering angel by his side, a vision of elegance that he does not deserve, never has and never will.

Watching the "Celebration" show yesterday I was informed, in a rather smug and self-satisfied manner by Marcus, that the 25th anniversary of the accidental union in marriage of he and Joni was forthcoming. They gave each other presents (Joni's appeared to be of a much higher value in comparison to the trinkets and withered flowers offered by her cheapskate husband), fawned a bit, and generally grinned and bore it. Who knows, maybe they do have a happy marriage...as much as I wish it was ME celebrating an anniversary with her (not necessarily marriage, either...heh heh) I don't begrudge Marcus the luck he undoubtedly is supplied with in abundance. So hey, guys, happy anniversary.

Marcus put his foot in his mouth yesterday. I derived enormous pleasure from seeing him squirm, and squirm he did.

It went like this. Marcus was blabbing on about all the countries in the world that were finally being "ministered to" by the Daystar satellite's Holy Beam. He reeled off a few then he mentioned that one of the countries he was most excited about, who had expressed interest in putting Daystar on the air, was Russia. He said that one of the main things that the Russkies demanded was the "Joni Show"...

Well, no shit, Sherlock! Those Russians know a hot chick when they see one. They'd be happy if Joni's show was on an infinite loop and was all Daystar ever showed...which is, now that I think about it, a great idea.

So anyway, Marcus is delighted that the Bears want his wife. "Do you think you're ready to do a show in Russia, Joni?" and he starts naming possible show titles..."Joni Visits Russia. Joni Goes to Russia"...then he said it..."JONI DOES RUSSIA"!!!

Ha! They didn't show my baby's face, but it is certainly not unreasonable to believe that it was frowning and angry, embarrassed of this buffoon who she'd been married to for 25 years and who obviously had a cursory knowledge of late 70's-era pornographic movies. She forgave him between commercial breaks (even though he deserved no sympathy from her or anyone else, in fact she should have left him and answered my repeated calls to unite with me), and everything was hunky dory after the Daystar Singers belted out a particularly inspirational ditty.

If that weren't enough, one of the guests was a Christian sex therapist and it was question-and-answer time for the last half of the show. Words cannot describe the thrills and erotic sensations which coursed through my body as I watched Joni sit there next to her husband reading viewers questions that ranged from "Are sex toys alright?" to "Is it alright to masturbate now that my husband is dead?"...

Then Marcus asked his own question: "Is oral sex okay?" The bastard! I know exactly why he asked that question! No doubt it's a favorite activity in the Lamb bedroom and he was seeking some sort of "sanctified permission" from the sex-therapist. From a couple of comments he dropped it was pretty much made clear that, had the answer been in the negative, he would have ignored it, because there's nothing like a slobbery knob-slobbing from Joni...Joni, my true love, how it pains me to think of you pleasuring this guy with your rosy red lips, your soft and moist tongue, the gentle nibbling of your teeth...and he doesn't even notice or appreciate you for it! All he can do is focus on the DVD of "Debbie Does Dallas" playing on the bedroom TV!

Oh, God. I need to go take a cold shower.

Observations on my Regal Journey

Just a few random thoughts, some of which may be amusing to the general public, others relevant to yours truly and yours truly alone.

First, check out this article from "Charisma" magazine, which I always thought was a venue for some of the less reputable televangelists. But if this recent installment of "Fire in my Bones", by J. Lee Grady, is any indication, the publication has either changed it's tack or I've misunderstood it all these years (maybe both).
Anyway, the piece is called "The Deadly Virus of Celebrity Christianity", and it addresses exactly the same issues that I have with popular Christianity and a good portion of it's adherents. It's a concerted effort to avoid falling into the ranks of these snake-doctors and their followers (many of whom infiltrate even the most orthodox of congregations) that drives me to search for truth in other religions while accepting what I'd like to think of as "real" Christianity"...at least it's real to me, it's what's been revealed to me in the journey that I'm on. I have no doubt that revelation will continue to manifest in my life throughout the remaining years, but I'm just as certain that it will come through several belief systems, standing in the freedom that Christ offers. Such freedom, as I see it, allows a paradigm in which the exploration of and even the embracing of other cultural religious traditions is not forbidden. After all, a desire to enrich the spirit in various ways is not the unforgivable sin.

Okay, enough of the loftiness. I wanted to say something about a commercial that is being shown a lot recently.
A gathering of amateur musicians are gathered together for an impromptu "unplugged" jam session. They look as if they're having a mighty good time, singing the lyrics of "Viva Las Vegas" as if every word was written for and about them.
Then they get to the chorus, where they've changed the lyric to "Viva Viagra".
There are a lot of commercials that insult the intelligence of a pre-schooler...then there are commercials that are just goofy. This one falls into the latter category. Plus it's just plain unsettling to see a group of men congregated together to sing the praises of Viagra. "Hey, guys, I had a problem getting it up, and Viagra took care of it in a jiffy...How about you guys? Oh, really? Well let's get together and SING about it!"...
What the fuck? God, I hate stupid shit like this. I get an unpleasant physical reaction when I'm exposed to such pure, undistilled foolishness. I may be the only one who gets this feeling, I'd like to think not, but I sure do seem to be stricken with it a lot when I watch TV for very long.
How I long for the days when such things as erectile dysfunction and "male enhancement" weren't acceptable topics to discuss on television (and I'm not crazy about feminine hygiene products, either).
One thing, though. All of these Viagra commercials say you should call a doctor if you get an erection lasting for 4 hours or more...Let me tell you, if I get one of those, the LAST person I'm going to call is the doctor. I'm gonna dust off my "little black book" and go straight down the line from A to Z... then I might give the doctor a call, but by then it will be my back and not my pecker that's in need of his services.

Last night I saw a teaser for a new series beginning this fall called "Cavemen"...apparently the world famous Geico cavemen have scored their own television show (I was wondering why they hadn't put out any commercials recently).
I love the cavemen, I can't deny it. They're one of the few commercial "personalities" that I find humorous. The concept of the piltdown man somehow finding himself in the 21st century, replete with social skills but the gnawing suspicion that they're being condescended to by an insurance company (and maybe even the world at large), is hilarious, in my opinion.
But...but...
Can they sustain the comedic properties of the concept over the course of a 30 minute television show?
I just don't know. I hope so. I'd hate for the whole thing to be ruined by overexposure. For some reason I have a sneaky suspicion that this is exactly what is going to happen.
We shall find out...one thing is for sure: it's the first television series I've looked forward to in a long, long time.

Tom Petty was right on the money when he said "the waiting is the hardest part". I used to think he was talking about waiting for a hook-up to come through (ha ha), but these days I tend to apply this wisdom to the ongoing expectation of my Social Security disability check. It's supposed to take between 2-3 months after the appeals hearing before the initial check (w/back pay) comes, so the best I could get would be in a couple of weeks. Knowing how the government usually takes care of things, it will probably take another month and a half.
It's funny...I waited a year for my appeals hearing but it doesn't seem like that wait was nearly as long as the month and a half I've waited for this check. I'm sure the next month or so will be just as hard, maybe more so.
It might not be so bad if there weren't so many important things that need to be done in this house. The central heating and air unit has been down for some time. We froze our asses off last winter and we're burning up right now. A small window unit in the bedroom is working overtime as we take refuge there when the rest of the house, cooled only by fans strategically placed in windows, becomes unbearable.
Furthermore, our refrigerator broke down about three weeks ago...you never realize how essential those things are until you find yourself in need of one.
The couch in our living room has been broken for months, taking it's toll on our backs.
My car has sat in the driveway with a donut on the front passenger side for a month or two because I can't afford a new tire right now. 4 new tires is what I need and 4 new tires is that I plan on getting when the money gets here.
While I'm thinking about my car, the CD player needs to be fixed, too. Driving in silence took some getting used to...I thought I could never adjust to that, but I did. Still, I much prefer music while I'm puttering down the road. My wife's stereo needs to be repaired or replaced, too. The cassette player in hers is somewhat outdated, made worse by the fact that the Eject function doesn't work (which means that there's been one tape in it ever since she first got the car...luckily she found a way to get the radio to bypass the cassette function).
All three of us stand in need of new wardrobes. I need new shoes, new jeans, everything, really. I'll have to take the whole family to the mall and blow some cash on clothes.
These are the main "needs'' that I can think of...but with the wait I've endured and the general nature of the whole thing I think it's reasonable for me to get a few "wants" as well. Maybe a nice HD television to watch DVD's on (and "Cavemen", too!!!). My son wants an Acid 6.0 Music Studio computer program. I've got my eye on a sweet pair of Bose headphones that I've convinced myself I can't live without. An extended visit to Barnes & Noble is in the offing.
Hopefully we'll still have a good chunk of the funds left after all those expenditures for whatever might come along.
But it does no good to think about it all right now. In fact it's downright frustrating.
So I'm slapping Petty's "Hard Promises" into the CD player and singing along to "The Waiting" with as much passion and exuberance as those bozos in the latest Viagra ad.
